My sincerest condolences go out to Guru's family and friends.

I can't recall the number of hours since around age 16 (I'm now in my late-twenties), I spent listening to, bugging out to, being in awe of Gang Starr and both their and Guru's Jazzmatazz releases. I remember when I was hanging out the front of the Basement in Sydney after DJ Premier's solo show and all I could say to Guru, is "I am a big fan of your music". Star struck - definitely.

Anthony "Grand Master Roc Raida" Williams was born in Harlem New York on May 17th, 1972 to Brenda Williams-Bolling & William “Tony”

He passed away on Saturday, September 19th, 2009 from a cardiac arrest resulting from injuries he suffered in an accident while training in Krav Maga, a type self defense system that he had been studying weekly for the last two years. He was proud that his 15-year-old daughter, Asia, shared his passion for Krav Maga and was the only girl in their class.

At an early age, Anthony joined the Mt Neboh Baptist Church & was baptized under the leadership of the Late Rev. William D. Gardner. It is at Mount Neboh where he served faithfully during his youth. He was a member of the Children's Choir, the Junior Choir, the Usher Board, and a former mascot for the Male Chorus of which his grandfather, the Late Deacon Early Williams was a member.

Anthony Williams was both African-American and Puerto Rican. He lived most of his life in Harlem but after marrying his soul mate, Tyeasha on June 26, 1997, they moved to the Bronx. Several years ago, they realized their dream of owning a home and relocated their family to Maryland. He encouraged and shared in his wife’s dream of one day opening up her own beauty salon.

He began DJing at the age of 12, spinning at local parties around Harlem. By 1995, Roc Raida represented the United States at the DMC World DJ Championships and won! He was the first DJ from New York City to hold this title and was automatically inducted into the DMC/Technics DJ Hall of Fame. Throughout his life, he lived his passion - being a professional Hip Hop DJ. He was blessed to have touring the world as his day job. Williams was honored to have worked with recording artists including Showbiz & AG, Lord Finesse, Kool G Rap and most recently, he toured exclusively with Busta Rhymes.

Although his family called him “Ant” (short for Anthony), he became known worldwide as legendary DJ Roc Raida. In 1999, Grand Master status was bestowed upon him by a group of pioneering Hip Hop DJs, during a conference at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame & Museum.

Before he passed, he asked his 10 yr. old daughter, Nyra, who was the most interested, of his children, in DJing to take over for him as a DJ. She agreed!

With a very aggressive swagger on the turntables, those who knew Roc Raida were floored by his humbleness. His wife, Tyeasha reports, “His notoriety amazed him every day!” He never took that for granted. Williams was also known to be very quiet, private and easy going. His self-control was commendable unless he was pushed to his limit and then he would roar. In fact, Lord Finesse called his friend “the quiet lion” for this very reason. Those closest to him have the pleasure of remembering him also as a hilarious comedian, loving to joke and laugh.

Roc Raida through battles, performances, videos, dvds and even a Pepsi commercial, influenced thousands of DJs, both to party rock as well as to battle and he took several aspiring DJs under his wing to mentor personally. As a member of legendary turntablist crews, The X-Men and The X-ecutioners, he along with his brothers-in-vinyl took the world by storm, innovating, influencing and inspiring at every turn. In 2006, to progress and contribute to the Hip Hop DJ battle scene, he founded Roc Raida’s Gong DJ Battle, a national DJ battle that occurs annually, combining head to head turntablist dexterity with comedy and drama.

Not only was he a World Champion DJ, he was a dedicated father and husband.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, or don’t watch the news, you would know that there are some serious cholera outbreaks in Papua New Guinea as of late. So we emailed Dter to see how he was doing and aside from stating to me that “its gone crazy over there, we're getting heaps of press for a spectrum of issues. They put chlorine in the Eda Ranu water supply as a precaution.” He also shot through this ill (no pun intended) video of him rocking a party, as a mass of folks get down to some serious Electro.

In keeping with tradition, any listener to the now defunct Mothership Connection program on 2SER would have noticed that the show always was bigger than just music, mixes, random banter.

A heads up to the ABC investigative journalism television program Four Corners is quite a different post to what appears here regularly, still very, very relevant. NSW has some of the highest rates of juvenile detention in the country. As Matthew Carney's report reveals, the "lock 'em all up and throw away the key" solution is not working. It’s hard not to be mad at some of these people in power in NSW when programs that have proven success rates in making a difference to the lives of teenagers who are at risk of re-offending are still on the drawing board after 10 year trial periods. Programs whose future is still up in the air. The fact that there are so many youth in detention centres in this state, for acts as minor as possession is ridiculous. As you’ll see (while watching this report), some of these centres have a major overcrowding problem, those inside spend up to 18 hours in a cell with no toilet access. And people wonder why there is a lot of anger brewing inside a lot of these youth.

On another note: There was an eye-opening article on the tragic police shooting of Victorian teenager Tyler Cassidy in The Weekend Australian Magazine (8-9/8).

Late reporting on the latest effort from Gentleman Gene (Genetik) and Debonair P (Polarity) known collectively as Low Budget . Put it down to there are never enough hours in the day to familiarize oneself with all the good music out there, that it took me this long to go out and grab this. This second long player from the Melbourne, Victorian duo is a mellow, dope, refreshing, cool out, awesome release. P's diverse range of beats, are full of that supreme magnificent disco boogie, electro funk sound. Gentleman G. flows over P's creations effortlessly, speaking on a bunch of everyday topics you can relate to, no matter where you're at, what you do. As always P laces each track with a array of bunch of lyric quotes cut up proper. Personally this is my favorite album this year so far. Have not listened to a rap record over and over since Def Wish Cast's last long player. Not a fan of speaking on each track on a release, as a listener it ruins the experience to me. Lifelounge decided to stream the album back in February, when it dropped. Do yourself a favour and go listen.

Vapors *Australia's Premiere "Hip Hop" Magazine - Issue #1
This is a Hip Hop Mag/Fanzine I (Myme One aka Tha Wizid Ov Oz aka Treva aka Trevvie Trev aka Trevor Sutcliffe) worked on, from 1988 with Blaze founder of Vapors, and a few other dedicated people.
I did a number of things including,Photography, Layout/Design, Typesetting and Bromiding from Issue #2.

P.S This is possibly the world's first Hip Hop fanzine/magazine, published in June 1988.(If anybody knows of any earlier? Let us know.) Phase 2 had his hand in the publishing game early on also with NYC-IGT/Subway Sons? Newspaper stylee, late 80's.

1969-2008

"Angus Galloway, aka DJ Angus / DJ Bribe / Kid CC passed away aged 38 on February 5, 2008. He was one of Australia's most respected DJs and turntablists, a pioneer for the Brisbane electronic music scene.

Coming to prominence as hip hop DJ Bribe in the late 80s, Angus had phenomenal talent on the turntables and soon rose to prominence, battling and beating Australia's and some of the world's best. His hip hop talents were namechecked by Flavor Flav on record and during a supporting gig for the greats Public Enemy, Flavor called him out from off stage for special attention.
His ability to mix hip hop, disco and funk was world-respected, and he translated his appeal further through his transition into the world of electronic music in the early 1990s. At the helm of the then burgeoning Brisbane dance scene, the name 'DJ Angus' became associated with some of the seminal moments in Brisbane clubbing. Resident at the Beat Nightclub during its heyday, he then moved to the famous Tube in 1995 and proceeded to play all around Australia, wowing the nation as he went. He was regarded by many as the best DJ they have ever seen.

After recently returning from living in Melbourne to his beloved Brisbane, Angus was working with the hip hop group the Offensive Linesmen and played his last ever set at the Candee Flip party @ The Step Inn on Australia Day 2008. His last set was classic Angus as the early and mid 90s dance scene remembers him - fluid, dynamic, and nothing short of inspirational.

Remembered most fondly for his amazing scratching, Angus impressed visiting international DJs (and usually outshone them). John Digweed was so impressed, he asked Angus to lay down some scratches then used them for his stunning 1997 Bedrock remix of React 2 Rhythm's 'Intoxication'.

Along the way Angus touched innumerable lives and inspired legions of DJs, many of whom form the upper echelons of Australia's current crop. He could also count many of the world's top DJs and producers as personal friends. This was down to both his charismatic nature and his love of quality music across multiple genres. Everything from 70s funk, disco, house and more, to breakbeat, techno and hardcore rave. If there was a good record released, Angus had it - and usually two copies!
The hip hop and dance communities respectively, whilst shocked, have rallied together in their universal praise for his achievements. The internet especially has been a hive of activity with people across the globe universally expressing their sadness for the loss of a great. On a personal note, he was an inspiration, a mentor and loyal friend.

A memorial to Angus will be held at Centenary Memorial Gardens, 353 Wacol Station Rd Sumner at 10am on Wednesday February 13, 2008.

Sincere condolences to his family, friends and fans. He will be sorely missed."

So there was a program, discussion on downloading and the effect it's having on the music industry and artists (primarily Australian), right now. Nothing new in a world sense, this debate has been going on online, throughout blogs and everywhere from record stores through to the offices of major label record labels for quite some time.

This edition of the SBS program "Insight", appropriately titled "Mi Tunes" was aired last night at 7:30pm. SBS is primarily a channel that focuses on World news, World music, World cinema. Along with ABC, it offers a more global perspective than it's commercial competitors whose programming often appeals to those who don't really like to think that deeply - sensationalist current affair programs, well written but often glossy, cliche ridden drama and comedy programs from the states and a bunch of reality tv programs that are quite frankly shit and a waste of ones life.

So getting back to this discussion on downloading. These are my thoughts on last nights program and the whole debate:

It's a complex issue. It's certainly not as black and white as the draconian inhabitants of major record labels think it is. As far as Hip Hop and club music goes, mixtapes, mixshows and risk taking both in a musical sense and wider perspective, were the foundation for the development of these genres. If anyone has read Frank Broughton and Bill Brewsters excellent book "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life", then they would have seen that record labels when mixtapes were starting out couldn't understand them, their first reaction was to use their might to stop these tapes circulation and existance in every way possible. The same thing is happening with dowloading the only difference is that rather than taking each person who downloads music as opposed to paying for it to court, there is this three strike bullshit. As someone who has a blog, is a freelance writer, deejays and buys records, what infuriates me is these suits have no idea about the deejays role in breaking music still. Worse still if it was up to them, all we would hear is the garbage commercial music that is shoved down our throats everywhere from the mainstream newspapers to You Tube. They're still stuck in the past, spending ridiculous money on acts whose albums for the most part sound like a collection of lucklustre singles rather that a cohesive whole that you actually want to listen to. They promote acts who all look and sound like each other and then wonder why record sales are falling and blame it on downloading. Without the array of cool blogs out there there are a plethora of great artists that would never be known if it wasn't for music lovers putting their music out there. Not whole albums, but a song or two, so that people know about music that often is forgotten, ignored or unknown.

From a deejays perspective - if a track is shared, won't more people then want to see the artist live, won't more people want to go and get their record? Also, it's promotion - a lot of these artists, if it weren't for deejays, if it weren't for blogs, if it weren't for mixtapes, their fanbase would be non existant pretty much. I see a few of the musicians on the show's point of view to a degree, that downloading is taking money out of their pocket. But then at the same time, it would seem that downloading and uploading entire albums would seem to be the problem, not a song or two so that more people can actually check out their music and find about a cool artist they may not have necessarily known about. I didn't hear anything in the discussion about music blogs, so from in that sense, I definitely felt that ground wasn't covered. The debate focussed primarily on the activities of primarily high school teenagers and the effect their activities are having on Australian musicians - that's it. If you're passionate about good music and promoting it, that's what you're concerned with because that's what you do. You also want to see more music from the artists whose music you dig, so you will go and buy their records, tunes online as well as playing music that has not been released on music stores online or wax, music that deejays and music producers often put out there themsleves so that it gets heard! R.I.P. Angel Amado aka A.P.E.X

We wanted to send our condolences, prayers and thoughts out to the family and friends of Angel Amado (A.P.E.X). He was a king. One of the most loyal, genuine, honest, real, intelligent, powerful people we had ever met. He lost his life in a tragic motorbike accident on the afternoon of Saturday 24th. It's hard to believe he's gone......

His memory will live on in the hearts of many!

It was also the twentieth anniversary of Public Enemy's seminal It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back on the 19th of this month, so we threw in a few classics off that album and a few others.
